• Spent first five years of his professional career in Argentina at Racing, winning the 2001 Apertura championship.
• Left for Italy and Serie B in January 2004, joining Genoa for the first time; scored 33 goals in 59 second division games but the club's promotion to the top flight in 2005 turned to relegation to Serie C1 as punishment for sporting fraud.
• Joined younger brother Gabriel at Zaragoza in 2005; scored 16 goals in his first top-flight campaign, then 23 in second – a tally bettered only by the Liga's top marksman, Real Madrid CF's 25-goal Ruud van Nistelrooy.
• Scored another 15 goals in 2007/08 but unable to save Zaragoza from relegation; switched back to Genoa, now in Serie A, and racked up 24 goals in 31 games, including a match-winning hat-trick against local rivals UC Sampdoria. Finished joint second – one goal behind Zlatan Ibrahimović – in top scorers' standings.
• Made a joint €25m move to Inter – with Thiago Motta – in May 2009 and started strongly for Nerazzurri with five goals in his first five Serie A games.
• Ended the club's treble-winning season with 22 league goals and six in Europe, including both in the 2-0 victory against FC Bayern München in the UEFA Champions League final; also scored the only goal as Inter defeated AS Roma in the Coppa Italia showpiece.
• Signs a 12-month contract extension (until 2014) in August 2010, a few weeks before being crowned UEFA Club Footballer of the Year and UEFA Club Forward of the Year.
