Biography

Max Marolt placed third in the 1951 US junior ski championships, later attending the University of Denver. Known for his breakneck style, he competed for the US at the 1960 Winter Olympics and the 1954 and 1958 World Championships. Marolt supported himself as a carpenter during his racing days. But he later settled in Aspen, helping to establish that community as a ski mecca. He became a local politician, originally starting out as a County Commissioner. In 1995 he was named to the Aspen City Council, and in 1997 he ran for mayor of Aspen, unsuccessfully. Marolt was inducted into the US Ski Hall of Fame in 2003.
