Biography

Daniel Ahearn emigrated from Ireland and the family name was originally Ahearne, the “e” being dropped when he passed through Ellis Island. In 1911, he set a world record in the triple jump with 15.52 (50-11), which was the first IAAF-ratified world record. He was the brother of [Tim Ahearne], the 1908 Olympic triple jump champion for GBR/IRL. Daniel Ahearn was an eight-time AAU triple jump champion – 1910-11, 1913-18, and three times won the indoor AAU title (1909-10, 1916).
