Figure skating had been on the Olympic Program at the 1908 and 1920 Olympic Games, and had been on the program for the 1916 Olympic Games, but this was the first Olympic Winter Games, and it was a natural sport to include on the program. The three standard events – Men's, Ladies', and Pairs – were held outdoors at the [Olympic Stadium], which was standard in this era, although it had been held indoors in 1920 at Antwerpen. Men and women skated compulsory figures and a free skating program, with the compulsory figures counting towards 60% of the final score. Overall placements were determined by the majority placement system. During their programmes, the competitors were accompanied by a band, playing mostly marching music.
