Overview

The 1992 gymnastics competition was conducted at the [Palau Sant Jordi], which had been specially constructed for the Barcelona Olympics, and was completed in 1990. In addition to gymnastics, handball and volleyball finals were also held at the venue. It continues to be used as a popular venue for sports, concerts, and various cultural events.

There was a change in the apparatus finals. As in 1984-88, eight gymnasts advanced to the final round based on the qualifying scores in the team all-around. But in 1992 the qualifying scores were then thrown out and only the final round determined the placements and medals on each apparatus.

The Soviet Union was no longer an actual entity, but its reincarnation, the Unified Team, won the most medals and gold medals for both men and women, with 12 medals and 6 golds by the men, and 6 medals and 3 golds by the women. On the men's side no other nation won more than one event, but China won 6 medals. Romania and the United States both won 5 medals on the women's side, with Romania winning 2 events.
