The Gravity from Front is a concept design (at least, I think it's just a concept) for an interactive lamp that reacts to your presence. When you're not in the room, it lays down and goes to sleep. When you enter, it wakes up, stands and turns on to give you light.
creepy. and. cute.
The Gravity is equal parts cute and creepy. Cute because it's sort of like a pet that's happy to see you when you come home. Creepy because it's a lamp that moves by itself! No idea if they're actually going to make this or how much it will cost if they do. Or how they keep the lightbulb from smashing when it hits the ground.

Why not use a small bundle of super bright LEDs? Those wouldn't break. And they are cheap.
If they have a chance of breaking, then encase them in a clear rubber ball.
The only questions I now have it, what kind of low cost sensor do you use to make it work when someone walks in the room?

Its made the same as tent-poles are made... there are short segments of tube with a string running the length inside and whenever it wants to go limp, the string inside is given some slack letting the tubes move just far enough away from each other to bend. When the lamp wants to stand up the string is pulled tight, forcing the tubes together so that they all go straight.
I want one of these! (I shall call it "Lampy.") But if the bulb burns out, does that mean the lamp is dead?
The next thing you know, we will be arguing with intelligent doors.
I could see phallic shaped gravity lamps selling quite briskly =D

Motion sensors are cheap. To protect the light, one should slowly unreel the cords keeping the psots taut. The lamp should gently recline to sleep, anyway.

Getting it to lay down without breaking would not be difficult. Motion sensing isn't an insurmountable obstacle, either (though not necessarily easy, since you can't always predict which way the thing will lay down). However, from the perspective of one who has a relatively small bedroom, I have to ask: would a lamp that takes up a lot more space when *not* in use actually be that useful?
I can understand that it'll be the same size as any normal pole lamp when I'm around, but the principle is still there. Plus, like an earlier poster said, the obvious question arises: what good is a lamp that lays down *after* you leave, and is only cute-looking when you're not there? :) (though the rising action would look cool)
I'd be afraid that thing would get up and kill me in my sleep or something. Something very, very, very creepy about that thing...
does it equally stand and light up when sensing a pretty girl or even when an old witch is in the room? does a male's presence also make it to move up (is the gravity a homo- / hetero- / bi-) :) :)
Ok, so what exactly happens if the power goes out? Does the lamp crumple like a kick in the nuts or will it stay erect?
Ahhh, but does it REALLY lay down when you leave the room? Who would know? Maybe it's just clever marketing, it stays upright all the time, leaving you to believe that it lays down when you leave!!!
I think this lamp works on the same principle as pop-up toys (those toys that use beads and string to pop-up when the string is pulled tight).

I really look forward to another addition to my life that lets me know it's tired of having me around. In fact, I hope the damn thing crashes with a resounding thud before I've even fully left the room, as if it were saying to me "Thank God that dude's gone, I'm so friggin' tired of standing up for him all day."
wow, I enjoy the thought of a lamp poping up when i come home. Man, would have to watch from the window to make sure that it go to sleep when you leave. coudl you imagen if the sensor didn;t catch you for some reason (like in school when their light sensors register no movment and the lights go off because your watchng a movie). So you wind up tripingover the lamp. It then catches your movement and stands up at attention.
If it works on motion sensors... you could have light while you're getting in bed, and once you've laid there long enough to it to believe no one is around it'll turn itself off... then when you need to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night? automatically lighted path, sexy.
don't blink...I think I saw it move!
I would mess around with the damn thing and make it stand up and go down just for the hell of it.
