Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture (AGORA)
The AGORA programme, set up by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) together with major publishers, enables developing countries to gain access to an outstanding digital library collection in the fields of food, agriculture, environmental science and related social sciences. AGORA provides a collection of up to 10,000 key journals and up to 26,500 books in more than 115 countries. AGORA is designed to enhance the scholarship of the many thousands of students, faculty and researchers in agriculture and life sciences in the developing world. AGORA is one of the five programmes that make up Research4Life: AGORA, HINARI, OARE, ARDI and GOALI.
Research4Life is a public-private partnership of the WHO, FAO, UNEP, WIPO, ILO, Cornell and Yale Universities, the International Association of Scientific, Technical & Medical Publishers and individual international scientific publishers. The goal of Research4Life is to reduce the knowledge gap between high-income countries and low- and middle-income countries by providing affordable access to critical scientific research. Hinari, AGORA, OARE, ARDI and GOALI are providing researchers in low- and middle-income countries with free or low-cost online access to leading journals and books in the fields of health, agriculture, environment, applied sciences and law.
Hinari - Access to Research in Health Programme
Launched in 2002, Hinari Access to Research in Health programme is managed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in partnership with Yale University Library and up to 150 publishers. Hinari provides access to up to 13,500 journals, up to 60,000 e-books, and up to 110 other information resources. The journals can be searched through a special version of PubMed (Medline), and other article indexes.
OARE - Access to Research in the Environment
Launched in 2006, OARE (Online Access to Research in the Environment) is managed by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in partnership with Yale University and up to 60 publishers. OARE provides access to up to 11,500 journals, up to 27,000 e-books, and up to 40 other information resources in a wide range of disciplines contributing to our understanding of the natural environment, including environmental toxicology and pollution, zoology, botany, ecology, environmental chemistry, geology, hydrology, oceanography, meteorology, climatology, geography, environmental economics, environmental law and policy, conservation policy and planning, environmental biotechnology, environmental engineering, energy, and many other disciplines.
ARDI - Access to Research for Development and Innovation
Launched in 2009, ARDI (Access to Research for Development and Innovation) is coordinated by the World Intellectual Property Organization together with its partners in the publishing industry with the aim to promote the integration of developing and least developed countries into the global knowledge economy, allowing them to more fully realize their creative and innovative potential. ARDI provides over 1,000 institutions access to up to 7,500 journals, up to 22,000 e-books, and up to 25 other information resources. By improving access to scholarly literature from diverse fields of science and technology, the ARDI programme is designed to reinforce the knowledge infrastructure in developing and least developed countries and to support researchers in these countries in creating and developing new solutions to technical challenges faced on a local and global level.
GOALI - Access to Research for Global Justice
Launched in 2018, GOALI (Global Online Access to Legal Information) is a new programme that provides free or low cost online access and training to law and law-related content in eligible institutions in low- and middle-income countries. GOALI is coordinated by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and its partners, Brill Nijhoff, as founding publisher and initiator of the programme, the International Training Centre of the ILO, Lillian Goldman Law Library at Yale Law School and the Cornell Law School Library as academic partners. The aim of GOALI is to improve the quality of legal research, education and training in low- and middle-income countries, and in turn strengthen legal frameworks and institutions and further the rule of law.
