I’ve started a list of essays and articles that I feel are important touchstones and reference points for interaction designers. These are not books (my Top Ten Essential Interaction Design Books), book chapters, or presentations (list to come), and I’ve certainly left out some classic (and not-yet-classic) articles. The list, as the best lists often are, is idiosyncratic. But please offer your own suggestions for additions in the comments.
If an article isn’t linked, most likely it is behind a firewall (the ACM’s firewall, to be specific). If you find an article publicly available, please let me know its URL.

Great List Dan! Very exhaustive and going way back too.
Thanks!!
great list, dan!
btw.: if you have little descriptions or comments on the links, please add them. Some important findings are frequently misused, e.g. “The magical number seven..” so some guidance would make it even better.
But even without it is one of the best collections of readings I saw ’till now.
What about “Designing for People” from Henry Dreyfuss. I know it`s more about Industrial Design, but i think a recommended reading for every Ixd.
Designing for People is a book, not an article.
Awesome list Dan. Thank you for putting it together and sharing!
I do think theDonella Meadows article on systems thinking fits well here too
Either at the original
http://wholeearth.com/issue/2091/article/27/places.to.intervene.in.a.system
Or where it’s bookended by developers framing of systemic thinking
http://www.developerdotstar.com/mag/articles/places_intervene_system.html
Also – all the articles behind pay walls do have urls that will point to their abstracts and other useful info like references etc (in the case of the acm papers) so even if people cannot download the paper, they can see what it’s built on.. Totally understand that it’s not a good situation, but maybe better than nothing..?
Thanks, Dan! This is going to be my homework for the next several weeks.
Awesome List Dan !!
Thank you so much for posting it.
Keep ‘em coming
Thank You so much. Its like ONE-STOP place for brilliant articles.
I’m a master’s student studying Interaction design at Ostfold University, Norway. I found your list very very useful. Thanx for the compliation. Really great job that I’ve been expecting for a long time..!
Thanks for this list of essays and articles. I’ll enjoy going through this useful collection
