D*I*Y Planner Hipster PDA Edition

D*I*Y Planner Hipster PDA Edition 3.0

DiyP3 LogoWelcome to the D*I*Y Planner Hipster PDA Edition 3.0, a series of approximately one hundred free productivity forms designed for printing onto index cards (a.k.a., the Hipster PDA). Designed especially for the D*I*Y Planner project by Douglas Johnston, the package includes a wide array of cards covering life management, project planning, calendars, notetaking, business development, and creative uses like writing, storyboards, mind mapping, and photography.

These are a subset of our regular D*I*Y Planner forms, completely re-designed for the smaller size, and may be used in conjunction with a full-sized planner, alongside a notebook like a Moleskine, or as a stand-alone system. Although chiefly inspired by David Allen's Getting Things Done, an emphasis has been placed upon tweakability, multiple methodologies, and tinkering (endlessly!) with ideas.

The package includes:

  • A series of graphical and photographic covers, including folding versions (with an optional envelope), and an OpenOffice.org template to create your own.
  • A Getting Things Done Quick Reference Card, including a flow chart, a weekly review list, and a list of "Stuff". (The "Getting Things Done" card is obviously based upon the excellent book of the same name by David Allen, and is therefore © David Allen). For PERSONAL, non-commercial use only, please.
  • Yearly calendars for 2006 and 2007, in both Sunday-Saturday and Monday-Sunday configurations. (Yes, your pleas were heard!)
  • Many different variations on the monthly calendar, both horizontal and vertical, as well as several one- and two-card weekly calendars.
  • The Day Keeper, a daily time management form, with multiple timed and untimed versions (some including actions and notes).
  • Actions, Waiting For, Agenda(s), Potential Projects (that's Someday/Maybe for GTD folks), To-Do Lists, and other task management templates, including several tabbed versions you can punch and include in a larger planner.
  • Several "top-down" life and project management forms, including Harmony, Project, and Priority Matrix.
  • Many multi-use templates, including Checklist, Table, Notes (four types), and Weekly Tracker.
  • A number of business-oriented forms, including Finances, Job Tracker, Product Idea, and Solutions.
  • Several flavours of the Matrix, a form for writing or tracking tabular data -- exercise/fitness logs, calorie counting, grades, borrowed library books, budget items, etc..
  • Templates for Contacts, Contact Logs, and Important Numbers.
  • A series of cards to unleash your creative side -- Story Idea, Plot Point, Character, Item, Story Board(s), Mind Map, a pocket Photographic Release, and more.
  • A set of handy tabbed cards, including an OOo template to contruct your own. (The folding cover also has an optional extension to protect tabs.)
  • Sundry other forms, including Book Note, Shopping, blank lines/grids, and more.
  • Tired of explaining the Hipster PDA to people and jotting down the 43 Folders and DIYPlanner.com websites? Well, pass along "The Helpful Hipster PDA Reference Card". ;-)

Downloads

This edition is available in three different packages: please read the descriptions to determine which one is best for you. To help conserve our valuable bandwidth, we ask that you only download what you need.

1-Up Version (3.0 Mb)
This PDF package is for printing directly onto index cards. You will need the correct size of card stock (3x5"), as well as a printer that can handle 1/8 inch margins. (Many printers only have 1/4 inch margins, and will clip the edges of the forms.)
4-Up Version (5.0 Mb)
This PDF package is for printing four adjacent cards onto regular letter-size or A4 card stock, then cut using a guillotine, trimmer, or scissors. If you can't print onto regular index cards without clipping, this is probably your best option. (This is the package the designer personally uses, and it's fast and easy with a decent guillotine.)
Graphics Version (3.3 Mb)
This package contains all regular size templates as graphic files (PNGs and JPEGs). Choose this version if you want to use your own layout program, if you want to modify the forms in any way (including changing colours, margins or text), if you want to use your own preforated forms, or if you experience problems using the above PDF files with your printer. The graphics may be modified in any standard graphics application, like Photoshop or The Gimp (which is free), and layout can be done in OpenOffice.org Draw (free), Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Publisher, CorelDRAW, or any other publishing program.

Note: This package has a number of non-dated calendar pages as well as the 2007 dated, but if you want new dated calendars, please see ygor's amazing Dynamic D*I*Y Planner Templates for the ability to generate your own with multiple page sizes, margins and date ranges.

Please take the time to view the Hipster PDA Read Me, and see the Frequently Asked Questions if you experience any issues. (These are currently being updated.) The packages are released under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial No-Derivatives license, which means that they are free for personal and non-commercial use. "Getting Things Done" and its related concepts are copyright David Allen, All Rights Reserved.

Many thanks go out to: all the D*I*Y Planner users who have provided valuable feedback over the past two years; to the DIYPlanner-Dev Google Group for all the testing and suggestions; to the supremely useful Timothy W. Foreman for providing the OOo templates on incredibly short notice; to Robert Lynch for the beautiful pen; to David Allen and company, who have not only provided inspiration (the D*I*Y Planner project was first designed to implement GTD), but have shown themselves to be exceeding helpful and supportive; and of course, to the uber-productivity mavens of the 43 Folders Google Group (including the Mann himself), whose advice and alternating moments of insanity and lucidity have been a font of endless ideas. Finally, this wouldn't have been possible without the love and support of my wife Jennifer Pohl and little Conor, whose smile wipes all worry away.

Yay!

It was a pleasure to be able to assist in the DIYPlanner project by creating the OOo Draw Cover template!

I'm glad that you got it done in time and I hope you are not too exhausted.

Thank you, Tim

And thank you for the excellent job on the OOo templates. I doubt these would have been included but for your help. (And now people know where to go for help with them. heh.)

Fantastic Job

Awesome job! These cards are awesome and were worth the wait. I had some fun trying to figure out the folding cover, I finally understand how to do it. keep up the awesome work!

I'm still not 100% sure I have the cover folded correctly....any tips? (Or photos of the completed cover?

Folding Cover Instructions

Thanks dj

dj,

I know you're finally getting that well-deserved rest! After the zzz's wear off, you can tweak the new hPDA homepage to mention that, indeed, 2007 is next year: "Yearly calendars for 2005 and 2006, in both Sunday-Saturday and Monday-Sunday configurations. (Yes, your pleas were heard!)"

Thanks for your gift to the world! Hey Everyone... now would be a great time to donate a few simolians!

cheers,

hPDA3-covers

Wow! This set is awesome. I'm already printing new cards for my deck. I love the cover options. I printed off the foldable cover using sample greeting card stock I received with my last batch of copy paper and the fold line matched the suggested fold line perfectly. Maybe this will work for others. Great Job!!!. Thank You-Joannna

Text doc

Thanks, this is fantastic.

I am curious though, if anyone has considered making any of these a text doc for openoffice. Then, one could import google calendar info with a macro.

I know, super ambitious. Just wondering.

Super ambitious, to be sure...

Now that the hPDA Edition is out of the way, the next project is the Widget Kit that will allow OpenOffice.org templates to be easily constructed with a minimum of effort. From there, I hope that we might be able to construct macros and perhaps "webify" certain of the templates. I only have vagues ideas about this as of yet....

dj

can't you just print your

can't you just print your outlook calendar in custom sizes? Using this option, you'd set it to fit your DIY templates, and use these to print.
regards from portugal.

Congrats!

Thanks for making these. To have such nice looking cards takes a ton of work and patience...thanks for your efforts.

trouble downloading

When I download any of the hipster PDA files they take a while and my message says I have downloaded the proper sized file to match with the description. When I unzip though, I get two files, both of which have the whopping size of 0 bytes. I have downloaded other templates with no probs. Any ideas what might be going on with the hipster PDA size?

solved the prob

OK, solved the problem. Downloaded a new unzip utility and abandoned a sucky one.

They fit great glued into my pocket Moleskine

Instead of just keeping the hipster pages in my Moleskine's accordion pocket, I found that I can glue in a few of the calendar pages at a time in my pocket Moleskine, giving me a hybrid planner/log. I'll have have to do is keep a gluestick handy in my bag.

Bless you Brave Souls!!

Who take on the tremedously tedious job as a volunteer to make these templates up!

Now with the hipster, I can revive an old habit with templates that fit me, and my purse!! TY TY TY!!

Dowload Questions

Good afternoon:

I could use a bit of assistance. I am very new to GTD; while searching I found this terrific resource. I downloaded the graphics version of the DIY Planning forms. After I unzip the dload my ver of Acrobat Standard V7.0 would not open the files. I received error messgaes claiming the file was either incompatible or missing components. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Opening Graphics...

Hi Giovanni

By graphics version I assume you have 'DiyP3_hipsterPDA_gr.zip'. These are PNG files not PDF's You can view or print the files from your browser, however to manipulate them you will need something like the Gimp. All other D*I*Y Planner Templates are in PDF (Acrobat ) format and the D*I*Y Widget Kit is in OOo.

Problems

Tried downloading all files numerous times, will not open with any of three different zip utilities. Not sure what's going on? Thanks!

Problem at your end, I believe

What kind of 'puter/OperatingSystem/unzipper-applications are you using ?

I've downloaded these onto MS-Windows, Apple-Mac, and Unix-Linux machines and unpacked them with no problem.

specifics

sorry, wasn't thinking!

Dell Precision 450 Workstation- dual 2.8 Xeons/4 GB RAM
Windows XP Pro
Tried WinZip, 7-zip, and Windows utility. Downloaded each file x3, same result. Other zipped files download and open normally. Weird. Will try from home later. Thanks for the help. Awesome work!

Update: Worked fine from home, still not from here though. Strange, since I administer both systems and firewalls, which have identical settings. Other zipped files from this site work fine. Weird stuff!

same for me

I also can't unzip the 1-up file, but 4-up is OK.

Computers: Dell Latitude 810 & IBM ThinkPad X41 & Compaq Proliant DL360-G2
OS: XP Pro SP2 * XP tablet version & Windows 2000 SP4
ZIP app: WinZip, 7-zip, and Windows utility

Keep trying

Try a fresh download. The files are OK. The difficulty is either in the transfer or on your computer.

Pages out of Order

Hi,

I downloaded the lates version today. I noticed following:
- The 4up pdf version(diyp3h_calendar_4up.pdf) contains 22 pages. When printing pages 2..22 (21 pages):
* calendar is ok
* Monthly is ok
* but Weekly are only 3 pages, so when printing double sided, one page shows Weekly the other page shows Day Keeper.
* so the last page of Day Keeper is printed only on one side

Thanks for your work.

I wrote a tutorial on how to

scaling hipster PDA templates down?

I've been experimenting with using Levenger's wallet sized (business card size) cards in my planner. Anyone know if you could just print these scaled down and have it turn out right?

-Kenny

I think they would be a bit small

I take the Hipster templates, and print them on a PocketMod-type layout (A7-size: see this image for a comparison to 3x5. At this size, I think the lines are too close together for anything but the most precise writing. If you aren't the neatest or careful writer, you might not be happy with the smaller sizes. However, you could take the widget kit, and make you own, but with wider lines. As to printing, however, it should work fine.

-Jon

Didn't Unzip...

The 4-up version didn't unzip for me, either, using three different utilities (SuperZip, Filzip, and the built-in Windows XP doohickey), with Firefox 2.0 and WinXP. I'll try downloading again.

Worked!

The re-download worked!

These are terrific. I don't use a hipster, but do use a very small DayTimer. Unfortunately, I can't punch anything to actually insert in the planner itself (it's wirebound and they don't sell an appropriate punch), but these are a terrific size to slip into the case and carry along.

Be blessed!

Hipsterism

I finally got a clue about hPDAs, and now I'm making my own. I blogged about it here...

2008 (and maybe 2009) Calendar

Could you please make a page with the 2008 calendar on it? These are wonderful for marking when my daughter is tracked out (on break) from year-round school.

Thanks!
Maryann

2008 (and maybe 2009) Calendar

I will second the request for a 2008 and 2009 calendar. I downloaded the file with the images, but I would really prefer not to edit every single calendar date in Photoshop. What was the file originally created in?

please

Me third. Dying for 3x5 calendar for 2008.

The answer is...

http://www.diyplanner.com/templates/dynamic
-----------------------------------
"I think the surest sign that there is intelligent life out there in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us." (Calvin and Hobbes/Bill Waterson)

one year one page 3x5

I don't see one of these dynamic programs (which are quite nifty) which render a single year on a single page in a way that it will print nicely and neatly on a 3x5 card. Perhaps it is my dimness which scares intelligent life away from the planet, but I am willing to be enlightened.

I have a one-pager in the works

If you cannot wait, buzz me thru the Contact button and I'll send you a 2008 one page hipster PDF

08 version???

Forgive me if I've overlooked the answer but is there going to be an 08 update to the hipster templates? (even just the calendar) I love the dynamic templates but can not get them to work in 3x5 plus I prefer the official versions for the various formats.

Same here! Would love to have a 2008 calendar...

Maybe you can tell us how to make one if you do not plan to have an update available... where di dyou get the 2007 calendar?

I have something,,,

I've used ygor's template software, and created two versions of the year at a glance hipster for you guys. I have a Sunday-begin and a Monday-begin hipster, both for 2008 and 2009. I dropped them all into one pdf file--just print the version you want. If you will use my contact tab to drop me an email, I can send them to you--I hope. Our internet has been absolutely abysmal these past few days, and I couldn't upload the pdf to this site... so we must try email, or posting onto a local server here in Krakow. But drop me a line, and we will figure something out.

-Jon

Let me know what you need

Put a request over here for the Hipster calendar you want -- months ? weeks ?

JavaJeb and I

have cooperated on getting up something for these guys--a year at a glance calendar. JJ's got it up at this node:
LINK

It's not approved yet, so if you aren't allowed to view it yet, just wait.... It'll be up sooner or later.

ygor.... If you wish, please feel free to move that to your pre-done pdfs. We used your dynamic template maker to do this. So, if you want to move the file to your page, please feel free to move it, and delete JJ's post.

-Jon

I already did a few Hipsters in the Just-Print-It's

They are daily pages, but start with the same year-on-one-page as page one to get the rest of the pages facing properly. I will copy your document into the list. Thanks to both of you.

Dynamic Templates are what

Dynamic Templates are what you want. Click on the purple tab at the top of the page.

Marta

Marta, if you look up above, you will find a couple posts after my first offer, that I provide a link to another post on this site, with the template you are looking for. I just checked the link, and it's good. Unfortunately, I can no longer find the file on my computer. I guess I deleted it after it got posted here. Sorry--but at least it's still available.

-Jon

files won't open

Hello,
When I download the 4 up version I cannot open the files with the latest version of Adobe. Adobe thinks that they are corrupt. Any suggestions?
Mitch.

in such a case...

.... it is always wise to download again. First trash the files you downloaded, and download from this site again. it is always possible that the file got corrupted during download, or, more likely, didn't complete, but the browser thought it did, thus producing a corrupt file, so a second download will not hurt you. This time, compare the predicted file size (stated size) with the final result to be sure you got the whole thing.

-Jon

thanks for the handbook, i

thanks for the handbook, i have download it. But I can't understand the label of the calenders, for example, the "L2SA", "L2SB","L2MA","LFS","LFM","B7L","B7","TM","UC"...
What's the meaning of them? Thank you very much!

My Journey Began Here

Feeling nostalgic today. This topic represents the beginning point of my DIY Planner journey. I still use the Hipster PDA templates that I saved on my my flash drive way back then. Thanks Doug!
