Unix/Linux Command Cheat Sheet

In an attempt to find a good Unix reference for you FOSSwire readers, I was unsuccessful at finding a decent one on the Internet. So, why not make one?

    Discussion: Unix/Linux Command Cheat Sheet

"newdir" in File Commands and "command" in the Searching box should be italicized. Also, shouldn't mkdir be in there?

      duff:

How did I miss mkdir? Anyway, I added that and fixed the italics on newdir and command. Thanks!

Consider adding scp along with ssh, especially since the options for port# are different.

Suggest replacing rpm and dpkg with yum and apt-get.

      Consider adding ifconfig and iwconfig

Consider adding pointers for finding documentation: man foo info foo help foo foo --help ls -l /usr/share/doc/foo

      Consider replacing "more" with "less".

Instead of "which", I recommend "type -a" because it lists bash builtins, functions, and aliases too. It's very confusing to read the documentation for a binary in /usr/bin when you're actually executing something else.

Consider deleting "whois" and adding "ifconfig" and "iwconfig"

I consider the ! commands dangerous, because I can't see them before they execute. Consider and -R instead.

Under "installation" I suggest combining commands like this:

./configure && make && make check su -c 'make install'

If configuration succeeds, you'll want to continue with make. If there's a "check" target, it's a good idea to use it. And "make install" will require root privileges.

HELP! Anyone know what the simplest way in unix is to return a machine's external IP address (like ipconfig in win/dos CLI)? I've seen a bunch of PITA scripts for this, but not a simple command, which seems plain weird. I'm having to use this all the time and can't find this command and suspect it's not as easy as MS, which I find very weird.

BUT, besides that, this is an awesome cheat cheat and I am posting in on my wall because of all the unexpected unix junk I have to do, like the external IP determination. Please somone!

Thanks again for the awesome little reference piece.
