Welcome to the website of the Open Service Oriented Architecture collaboration.

The Open SOA Collaboration represents an informal group of industry leaders that share a common interest: defining a language-neutral programming model that meets the needs of enterprise developers who are developing software that exploits Service Oriented Architecture characteristics and benefits. The Collaboration is not a Standards Body; it is a set of vendors who wish to innovate rapidly in the development of this programming model and to deliver Specifications to the community for implementation. These specifications are made available to the community on a Royalty Free basis for the creation of compatible implementations. When mature, the intent is to hand these specifications over to a suitable Standards Body for future shepherding.

Projects

The Open Service Oriented Architecture collaboration is currently working on a series of specifications that are made available to the industry on a Royalty Free licensing basis. This site is the focal point both for completed specifications, and for early draft specifications where we seek community feedback.

The Industry Partners are currently working on two main projects:

  • Service Component Architecture (SCA)
  • Service Data Objects (SDO)

Service Component Architecture aims to provide a model for the creation of service components in a wide range of languages and a model for assembling service components into a business solution - activities which are at the heart of building applications using a service-oriented architecture.

Service Data Objects aims to provide consistent means of handling data within applications, whatever its source or format may be.  SDO provides a way of unifying data handling for databases and for services. SDO also has mechanisms for the handling of data while detached from its source.

SCA and SDO can each be used on their own - there is no requirement to use both of them in the same application.  SCA and SDO used together provide a powerful and flexible way of building applications around a service-oriented architecture.

The SCA Version 1.0 specifications published by Open SOA in March 2007 are now working towards formal standardization within OASIS in a group of Technical Committees working under the "Open CSA" member section.  You can find details of this work on the OASIS site here, and the Technical Committees are all linked here.

Please use the navigation bar on the left of the page to find your way around the information on this site. The prime intentions of this web site are:

  • To provide a single point of contact for Specifications and other technical collateral that we have already published,
  • For the first time, to make available some "Work-in-Progress" Draft Specifications and some information on future directions. In doing so, the partners hope that we can get your early feedback as part of the effort to complete the specifications.

Please Provide Feedback

The authors of the specifications particularly welcome feedback from the community as they complete these specifications. In order to be able to use your feedback, you will be requested to agree to a click-through Feedback agreement which clarifies the IP rights associated with your input, since the specifications are published on the basis of a Royalty-Free license. Feedback is most welcome on both the SCA project and the SDO project.

Please note also that at any point whilst navigating this site, Feedback may be submitted via the "Feedback" navigation buttons on the left (blue) column in the page being viewed.

Interested in Closer Involvement? For example, you can join the OSOA Supporters group, which gives you access to more information about the work of the OSOA specifications teams and provides additional facilities for feedback and discussion.
